“Then Jesus turned, and saw them following, and saith unto them, What seek ye? They said unto him, Rabbi, (which is to say, being interpreted, Master,) where dwellest thou?” (John 1:38 KJV)
“What seek ye?” or ESV “What are you seeking?”. It’s a core question then and now for anyone who follows Jesus. The disciples in John 1 never directly answer this question with words that are recorded, but they do answer this question with what they do. They each find something in Jesus that they are very much seeking and some of them draw others in without hesitation. The question is more than, are you seeking? It’s more than being sure that you are seeking something. It wants to know what is the target? If an answer were to complete something, what would that answer look like? Once you found it, would you know it? Would you be able to walk alongside him and grow in the knowledge and practice of what you now know to be reality? People love seekers. They aren’t so sure about those who find, because it prompts them for a decision. People who seek Jesus are going to find him and they’re actually going to be able to walk with great joy in whom they have found.
“Ask, and it shall be given you; seek, and ye shall find; knock, and it shall be opened unto you: For every one that asketh receiveth; and he that seeketh findeth; and to him that knocketh it shall be opened.” (Matthew 7:7-8 KJV)
