“Ye made also a ditch between the two walls for the water of the old pool: but ye have not looked unto the maker thereof, neither had respect unto him that fashioned it long ago.” (Isaiah 22:11 KJV)
Over the years there are many things that we make to fortify what we have. We keep in the back of our minds a picture of how our country was founded, the mission statements that our organization started with, and the markets which made our company so successful as it began to grow. We begin to feel out principles of what seems to make good sense. We develop plans that should carry us through most any disaster. We hire consultants and counselors by the dozen. In our over zealous management we have forgotten the sweet surrender to Jesus that made it all possible. None of what we have would have been possible unless He had made provision for it.
Better stated, none of what we have could have been obtained by our own efforts. When you first read that sentence, it may seem hard to believe. After all, we received our check that purchased our stuff based on a percentage of our involvement in a given project. We billed for time we actually spent on-site. We have established the exactness, down to a time clock punch, of what we have done and how much we ought to get for it. There are specific reimbursements for specific tasks that are written into law. This is one thing if your treasures are here and now and you are doing your best to keep them away from those who work so hard to take them away from you, but there is a larger dimension here. Not just a dimension of a now verses a then. There is someone who establishes a framework around all that is. He sows seeds that are bigger than we can carry and more real than we can lift. God is the very author of life and designs all purposes for His glory. When we have made it our purpose to disregard Him and His design, then all He has to do is step back and let those who devour devour those who devour those who devour. The cannibals will take care of themselves.
