“Therefore shall a man leave his father and his mother, and shall cleave unto his wife: and they shall be one flesh. And they were both naked, the man and his wife, and were not ashamed.” (Genesis 2:24-25 KJV)
“…Not ashamed.” So often it is thought that when a husband and wife couple come together that there is a retarding effect of what would otherwise be a person’s brightest points. To run an idea by a spouse first may initially seem like the idea is likely to loose steam or to be vetoed all together. A more practical perspective may see this as keeping ideas and actions which would otherwise be undesirable from ever happening or at least steering them in a more helpful direction. There may be some truth to this, but have you ever noticed that as a couple gets closer and closer together that the independent energies they have play off of each other to increase the distance they are able to go? It is common practice in cabling to twist pairs of wire near each other at slightly different twist rates or intervals. This helps keep interference between sets of cables low. Signals going down one set of cables twisted at a different rate than another set of cables do not transverse as easily. Similarly, the unique closeness that each couple has is designed to keep interference out and extend the distance that their relationship can carry the energy. This practice of closely twisting their lives together allows the signal that God is transmitting through them to be received with greater clarity, and in their most naked moments leaves the one completely unashamed of the other. The pair energizes and enhances the signal by their closeness while being a natural defense to outside interference.
It is no wonder the husband and wife relationship is so often a model for our relationship with God. Rather than viewing God as a possible deflation of our agenda, if we stop trying to string ourselves out (and often being shorted out) and come closer to God; He comes closer to us (see James 4:8). We can increase the distance that the signal that we are carrying is capable of by wrapping ourselves and every facet of our lives closer to God.
